In the history of numerical (or computational) general relativity, the "Frontiers" meeting in 1988 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (USA), played a pivotal role in establishing numerical relativity as a major topic in computational physics and simulation science. The "New Frontiers" meeting in 2006 at the AEI Potsdam convened following major breakthroughs in numerical simulations of binary systems. The most recent "Frontiers 2022" conference was instrumental in assessing the state-of-the-art and identifying future directions in numerical relativity. The upcoming "New Frontiers 2025: past, current and future challenges in Numerical Relativity" will emphasize the significant theoretical and computational challenges ahead, not only in understanding the observations of gravitational waves and electromagnetic counterparts but also in comprehending the nature of gravity at a more fundamental level. Reflecting on past adversities and how our community overcame them may
guide us in current and future endeavors.
The meeting will take place at the University of the Balearic Islands starting on July 21st and ending on July 25th, 2025. There is no registration fee.

During the past few decades rapid progress has been achieved in deepening our understanding of the origin, history and physical processes in the universe, and our place within it. The Szczecin Cosmology Group at the Institute of Physics of the University of Szczecin (http://cosmo.usz.edu.pl) and the Division of Intelligent Systems at the Department of Intelligent Technologies (https://www.ippt.pan.pl/en/research-units/zti#division-of-intelligent-syste…) of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT-PAN) in Warsaw, invite applications for 2 Postdoctoral positions.
The positions are available through the OPUS 26 grant of the Polish National Science Center (NCN) led by prof. Vincenzo Salzano, at the University of Szczecin, as P.I., and entitled "Can a slime mold help us alleviate cosmological tensions?". Co-P.I. will be prof. Tomasz Denkiewicz, at the University of Szcecin, and dr. Jacek Szklarski at IPPT-PAN.
In this project we will explore a new methodology to compare different cosmological models and theories by developing a tool completely independent of the gravitational theory. The goal is to use this tool to reconstruct the cosmic web and eventually help to resolve or mitigate present cosmological tensions in a (cosmologically) model-independent way.
We will start from the behaviour of a biological system, the Physarum polycephalum, a slime mould, one of those yellowish creatures that grow on your badly preserved food. While exploring space in search of food, the Physarum creates characteristic networks, with ``veins'' of the organism connecting all the positions where the food is located. These networks are not random, but are dictated by chemical and physical laws.
We will use the behaviour of this organism, we will simulate the way it moves and we will compare its web with the cosmic web. We already know that there are "visual" similarities. But can we "upgrade" the algorithm and use such gravity-independent web to understand how gravity works on large scales?
We will establish the feasibility of such approach by writing from the scratch a code to simulate the Physarum behaviour; by running several simulations to create Physarum "Universes", including ad-hoc updates to simulate cosmological aspects (voids, baryons); by comparing them with cosmological simulations based on many cosmological models based on General Relativity. Finally, we will confront these Universes with the real Universe, using the most up-to-date data we have collected so far on the cosmic web, made up of millions of galaxies.
Given these goals, the requirements to apply for the Postdoctoral positions are:
- Position A, based at the University of Szczecin:
1) Ph.D. in Physics with specialization in Cosmology and/or Astrophysics, obtained not earlier than 7 years before commencing employment;
2) a first postdoctoral experience (about 2-3 years) would be an asset, but is not required;
3) demonstrated experience to modify, handle and run any of the many numerical codes currently used for cosmological simulations in General Relativity (and/or in Extended Theories of gravity). The candidate is expected to interpret and compare results from different gravitational scenarios with those obtained from slime models and with observational data. Any suitable programming language or framework can be used for this task;
4) the ability to perform the described tasks should be backed by a relevant publication record by the candidate;
- Position B, based at IPPT-PAN:
1) Ph.D. in Computational Sciences or Physics (specialization in Cosmology, Astrophysics, Complex Systems, Multi-agent Systems, or a related field would be an asset but not mandatory), obtained not earlier than 7 years before commencing employment;
2) a first postdoctoral experience (about 2-3 years) would be an asset, but is not required;
3) demonstrated professional expertise in parallel programming, including GPGPU units, is necessary. The candidate is expected to efficiently implement slime models, run various parameter studies, and interpret and compare results with existing models. Any suitable programming language or framework can be used for this task. Additionally, the candidate is expected to explore applications of the slime model beyond cosmology, such as transport networks;
4) the ability to perform the described tasks should be backed by a relevant publication record and software coded by the candidate (preferably in the form of open-source repositories).
The deadline for application is 31st October 2024. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews on 11th - 15th November 2024.
The research activities will begin on 1st January 2025 and last for 2 years (24 months). The gross yearly salary will amount to 140,000 PLN (corresponding to a monthly net salary of ~6900 PLN). In addition, the grant provides funding for hardware and travels both for visits at the two nodes of the project and to attend conferences.

We seek applicants with preferred expertise in strong gravitational lensing who are interested in expanding their research focus to strong gravitational lensing involving gravitational waves. The ideal candidate will have considerable expertise in constructing lens models for galaxies (or galaxy clusters) as constrained by multiply-lensed light images, familiarity with analyzing optical images, and will be committed to working with local experts to incorporate additional constraints provided by multiply-lensed gravitational-wave events. Current ground-based gravitational-wave detectors have the potential to reveal dark matter (DM) substructures through high-precision timing of the arrival of multiply-lensed gravitational waves.
We envision that the combination of constraints from both light and gravitational waves will provide immunity from stellar microlensing, and reveal the nature of such sub-structures at high precision. If such small-scale structures can be confidently linked with dark matter model predictions, their existence would either provide strong support for or alternatively rule out the current standard cosmological cold dark matter paradigm. Apart from this work, involving a collaboration between research teams at CUHK and HKU, the candidate is strongly encouraged to pursue his or her independent research line. Local expertise is provided by the research teams at both CUHK and HKU, who are experts in the lensing of gravitational waves and light rays, respectively [e.g. 1,2].
At CUHK, since 2016, the group has built tools to detect, analyse, and make use of gravitational-wave lensing with ground-based gravitational-wave detectors in isolation or together with electromagnetic imaging [e.g. 1]. At HKU, the group is a leading expert in using traditional gravitational lensing of light rays to elucidate the nature of DM, including investigating investigating the linkage between dark matter substructures and their model predictions, such as subhalos (e.g., WIMPs) and pervasive density modulations (e.g., Axions) [e.g. 2].
There are furthermore three dark matter groups at CUHK, specialising in numerical simulations, indirect detection, and theory, and expertise in theoretical aspects of dark matter modelling. The postdoc's role would be to fill the role of a lens modelling expert in the joint endeavor to connect these two branches of lensing and pursuing dark matter studies. Apart from the joint work, the postdoctoral researcher is strongly encouraged to freely integrate and work with these groups and to develop their own independent research line throughout the study, with 50% time allotted to independent research.
Applicants should possess a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field and have a track record in lens modelling. Expertise in implementing new strong lensing analyses and modelling (using e.g. lenstronomy or an equivalent strong lens modelling software), a publication track record in substructure lensing, and experience implementing Bayesian analysis models are highly advantageous. Applicants from gravitational-wave lensing background are also welcome to apply.

The successful applicant will be developing rapid and accurate characterization of gravitational-wave signals from black holes and neutron stars using deep learning, and analysing data from the LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA observatories. The appointment will be based at the Gravity Exploration Institute of Cardiff University, with significant periods of time at the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research of the University of Tokyo. The precise timing is flexible and will be discussed with the applicant. This post is funded by The Royal Society.
Cardiff has a long history of involvement in ground-based gravitational-wave physics, particularly in source modelling, data analysis, and astrophysical and cosmological interpretations (Stephen Fairhurst, Mark Hannam, Vivien Raymond, B. Sathyaprakash, Bernard Schutz, Patrick Sutton, Fabio Antonini), instrument design and commissioning (Hartmut Grote, Katherine Dooley, Keiko Kokeyama), electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational-wave events (Cosimo Inserra), and education and public outreach (Chris North).
The Institute for Cosmic Ray Research hosts the large-scale cryogenic gravitational-wave telescope KAGRA and is actively involved in instrumental design and commissioning, and gravitational-wave data analysis (Hideyuki Tagoshi, Soichiro Morisaki).
The post is full-time and fixed term until March 2027 with a flexible start date.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is inviting applications for Visiting Scholars through its Visiting Program (TSVP).
The Visiting Program was launched in June 2021, with the goal of bringing leading researchers to OIST for extended visits. In keeping with OIST's interdisciplinary mission, the program spans all fields including, but not limited to, mathematics, physics, computational sciences, chemistry, engineering, and life sciences. Only researchers requiring access to a lab should apply as "Experimental Visiting Scholars" instead (see this overview of all OIST's Visiting Programs for other options).
Visiting Scholars will have the opportunity to carry out independent research at OIST, and to interact with one or more OIST Research Units during their stay. Visits will usually be of 3 to 12 months, with support provided for travel, accommodation and living expenses at the level of per diem. No teaching duties come with the position. However, Visiting Scholars are expected to give a general-audience lecture about their field of research within the first month of their visit. Research seminars and/or lectures for graduate students are also strongly encouraged. The Physics Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of astrophysics and cosmology to begin in August 2025.
We are searching for a candidate that complements and/or expands existing research directions in the department. Present activities include, but are not limited to, multi-messenger astrophysics, theoretical and observational cosmology, galaxy evolution, and gravitational-wave astronomy.
Missouri S&T is a member institution of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and actively involved in galaxy surveys, including the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

The RIT's Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation (CCRG) is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral research position.
We are looking for highly qualified individuals interested in pursuing research in the fields of numerical relativity, simulations of compact object mergers, such as stellar or supermassive black hole binaries, strongly emitting gravitational waves.
The group is actively developing new numerical codes and tools as part of The Einstein Toolkit Consortium. The CCRG hosts a number of research scientists and students involved in gravitational wave data analysis from the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the LISA consortium.
Our researchers have access to several computing cluster facilities at national computing centers such as the TACC's Frontera Supercomputer, XSEDE and dedicated over 3500-cores clusters with 5 PB of storage pool hosted at the Center.

The Enrico Fermi Fellowships are designed for exceptional graduate students all over the world aiming to fund parts or all of their Ph.D. to enrich their graduate experience by pursuing research across the theory/experiment divide. The program offers fellowships lasting one or two years (exceptional three years), focusing on fundamental scientific areas such as Fundamental Physics, Astronomy, Cosmology, Quantum Foundations, Complexity and Emergence, especially where research addresses conceptual frontiers.
