The 4th European Physical Society Conference on Gravitation, organised by the Gravitational Physics Division, will be held in person in Valencia (Spain) on November 13-15, 2023.
The aim of the conference is to showcase the rich landscape of current research in black hole physics and to stimulate exchange of ideas and discussion among the participants. Once regarded as a mathematical curiosity of Einstein's general relativity, the importance of black holes in fundamental physics is now incontrovertible. Black holes play a prominent role across many branches of physics, from astrophysics and cosmology to high-energy physics, from information theory to quantum gravity. Many such aspects of black hole physics will be covered at the 4th EPS Conference on Gravitation, and from a theoretical, observational and phenomenological perspective.
The conference is organised in three days, each one focused around three key topics - theory, observations, phenomenology - introduced by invited speakers and contributed talks followed by round table discussions. There will also be a poster session. The scientific program will be finalised in the upcoming weeks.
The conference will take place at ADEIT, the University-Enterprise Foundation of the University of Valencia.
Registration to the conference is already opened and will end on October 27th.
Submission of abstracts for contributed talks or posters is also opened and will close on October 16.
The registration fee for the conference is 50 EUR. The fee includes access to all sessions, all coffee breaks and lunches, the Monday Welcome cocktail, the conference dinner, and the certificate of participation issued online.

Upon the occasion of the 100th birthday of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat (29 December, 2023), whose 1952 paper on the Cauchy problem for the Einstein equations opened up the field of mathematical general relativity, this workshop brings together advanced doctoral students, promising young researchers, and leading experts in the field to discuss the spectacular recent developments in the area, to share and discuss techniques that have proven particularly successful, to assess new areas of contact, and to support existing and to promote new collaborations.

Fellowships at the University of Nottingham
The Nottingham Centre of Gravity (NCoG), the Particle Cosmology group in the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Gravity Research Theme in the School of Mathematical Sciences are very keen to host fellowship on topics that match or complement their research expertise: black holes and relativistic astrophysics, strong field tests of general relativity, gravitational waves, numerical relativity, QFT, analogue gravity and quantum simulators, quantum gravity and strings, amplitudes, CMB, cosmic strings, inflation, PBHs, dark energy, dark matter and modified gravity. Royal Astronomical Society
RAS postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for up to 3 years for early career research astronomers and geophysicists. The group of Computational Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology of the Departments of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Mathematics, of the University of Valencia (Spain) invites applications for three PhD positions. The focus of the research will be on numerical simulations of extragalactic, relativistic jets at parsec scales and in cosmological environments, and the development of numerical methods for hyperbolic differential equations with stiff source terms (with applications to resistive relativistic MHD, strong cooling systems, etc.). The Crete Center for Theoretical Physics (CCTP) has two 2-year postdoctoral positions in theoretical high energy and gravitational physics expected to start in the Fall 2023. Candidates with expertise in black hole physics, holographic dualities, and gravitational waves as well as numerical and/or mathematical general relativity are encouraged to apply.
Funding for these positions is provided by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. Salary is on par with that of junior faculty in Greece and the positions include funds for travel. The successful candidates, should they wish so, will also be supported to apply for the European Marie Curie fellowships in order to continue their appointments at CCTP for an additional two years.

This postdoctoral position arises from a recently awarded STFC grant "Penrose processes in an analogue black hole formed in hybrid light-matter (polariton) superfluid" in Sheffield. The researcher will work in the Cosmology and Relativity group with Dr Sam Dolan (School of Mathematics and Statistics) on topics in analogue gravity, and they will provide theoretical modelling for the experimental group led by Prof Dmitry Krizhanovskii (Department of Physics and Astronomy).
The aim of the project is to recreate a Penrose-like process in a laboratory quantum system, by using exciton-polaritons in semiconductor photonic structures based on III-V semiconductors. The condensation and superfluidity of polaritons generates a large draining vortex in a superfluid, emulating the "flow" of space-time into a black hole. The experimental team aim to image the trajectories of excitations (e.g. vortices) in this flow. The theory team, to include the postdoctoral researcher, will seek to describe the motion and dynamics of excitations using tools originally developed in General Relativity, as well as through simulations of the polariton fluid. The overall success of the project hinges, first, on establishing a robust theoretical map between trajectories in the laboratory system and the worldlines of particles or strings in an effective spacetime; and, second, on showing that excitations can extract energy from the system in a way analogous to the Penrose process
in the context of black holes. The contribution of the postdoctoral researcher will be essential in meeting these goals.
Overall, the project addresses fundamental physics questions with state-of-the art semiconductor quantum technologies developed in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the National Epitaxy Facility at the University of Sheffield: it relates general relativity to hydrodynamics and physics of macroscopically ordered light-matter states in solids, and it opens up new avenues in the study of quantum phenomena and gravity effects on the microscale.
The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent experience relevant to mathematical modelling and physics. Experience of solving ordinary and partial differential equations with exact, approximation and numerical methods is essential. A background in general relativity, analogue gravity and/or modelling of quantum fluids will be highly advantageous. You must display outstanding motivation, enthusiasm and commitment to undertake research in a fast-moving, interdisciplinary and international field. You will be expected to have excellent collaboration and communication skills, and to be able to work to a high standard both independently and as part of a team, while meeting project deadlines.

The project's workplan spans effective-one-body models for hyperbolic and generic-orbit binary black hole mergers, numerical-relativity simulations including test-body perturbative simulations, and Bayesian data analysis of non-circularized black hole mergers.
The project is embedded in an ongoing scientific effort on gravitational-wave science and modeling of multimessenger signals. The successful candidate has the opportunity to join the international Virgo and/or Einstein Telescope collaborations. The Jena group is also part of the computational relativity (CoRe) collaboration.

The Institute for Gravitational and Subatomic Physics (GRASP) at Utrecht University is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate in gravitational-wave astrophysics. As the successful candidate, you will work with real and simulated gravitational wave data from existing detectors as well as envisaged next-generation observatories such as Einstein Telescope, use statistical tools such as Bayesian analysis to assess what the challenges will be, and develop novel methodology to analyse the data accurately. With the developed methods, you will likely be placing much more stringent bounds on fundamental constraints from third-generation detectors. You will join the international Einstein Telescope Collaboration as well as the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration, and are expected to participate in analysing data as part of the latter.

you have probably received three spam emails from hyperspace following a hacker attack to our server, which has affected the mailing list. This attack has been contained and resolved now. I will monitor the situation closely in the coming days.
