Dear colleagues,
The workshop on "Effective fields theory, gravity and fluid dynamics" will take place from 16 - 18 December 2024 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The registration is now open until 31 October 2024.
Summary:
Black holes are inherently connected with fluid dynamics. For example, when black holes approach equilibrium, relaxation processes are governed by complex eigenfrequencies called quasinormal modes. In addition to determining the ringdown pattern of coalescing astrophysical black holes, quasinormal modes of black holes in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetimes dictate the onset of fluid dynamics in strongly coupled gauge theories described by the holographic correspondence.
Effective field theory (EFT) is a crucial tool for systematically investigating fluid dynamics and gravitational phenomena. Recasting relativistic fluid dynamics as an EFT has led to recent breakthroughs, solving the causality and stability problems that plagued previous formulations of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics for decades.
The workshop is intended to be highly interdisciplinary to seed new ideas and collaborations beyond what would be possible at more topically focused workshops.
Invited speakers include: Cliff Burgess* - Pau Figueras - Cynthia Keeler - Pavel Kovtun - Luis Lehner* - Ira Rothstein
* To be confirmed
We look forward to welcoming you in Urbana-ChampaignHelviOn behalf of the organizers (Patrick Draper, Jorge Noronha, Hector O. Silva, Helvi Witek)

Cosmic Flows 2025 continues a two-decade tradition of international gatherings dedicated to the study of cosmic flows. Following successful events in Queensland (2012), Marseille (2013), Quy Nhon (2016), and Cape Town (2020), this conference arrives at a pivotal moment in the field of peculiar velocity research.
In the five years since our last meeting, we've witnessed a paradigm shift in peculiar velocity studies. What began as the analysis of a few thousand velocities has evolved into preparation for surveys of unprecedented scale. With SDSS and CF4 data published, WALLABY's initial findings released, DESI poised to unveil groundbreaking data, and the 4HS main survey underway, Cosmic Flows 2025 provides a timely platform to discuss these exciting developments.

Project:
Semiclassical gravity describes the effective interactions of quantum matter with classical gravity at scales between those of classical and quantum gravity. It offers important insights but also highlights tensions in gravity-quantum unification. Important predictions rely on semiclassical gravity arguments, such black hole radiation (and evaporation) and the formation of structure in cosmology.
However, the mathematical and conceptual foundations of semiclassical gravity are poorly understood. This PhD project will support the goals of EPSRC Fellowship Grant EP/Y014510/1 in carrying out a rigorous study of the foundations of this theory, using state-of-the-art mathematical techniques in quantum physics and gravity, and characterising semiclassical gravity's regime of applicability with full precision.
You will be working with Dr Benito A Juarez Aubry and Prof Chris Fewster in the Department of Mathematics.

The Institute for Gravitational Wave Astronomy at the University of Birmingham is inviting applications for PhD positions in gravitational wave physics to work with Dr Gregorio Carullo.
Coalescences of two black holes are the most powerful cosmic events happening throughout the Universe. Their dynamics sources the strongest gravitational fields experimentally accessible, and gives rise to violent space-time deformations known as gravitational waves. The observation of gravitational waves by the large scale LIGO-Virgo interferometers on Earth has opened a golden era of strong-gravity exploration, powering the largest surge ever witnessed in gravity-related research worldwide.
Despite rapid progress, many open questions remain. Our understanding of the general-relativistic two-body problem is far from complete, with many nonlinear effects yet to be grasped. The astrophysical origin of the stellar binary systems giving rise to these black hole pairs, and their surrounding environments, has only started to be characterised. Further, gravitational waves could be the key in resolving long-standing cosmological mysteries such as the nature of dark matter or conflicting measurements of the Universe expansion rate.
The PhD candidate will delve into strong-gravity research, and gain experience into both advanced modelling methods in General Relativity and cutting-edge statistical inference techniques deployed on large supercomputers, applied to gravitational wave signals detected by current earth-based observatories or upcoming space-based missions. Details of the project will be agreed with the candidate depending on their interests and inclinations, but specific examples of challenging problems on which the aforementioned skills could be used include: measuring yet unobserved black holes vibrational spectra, modelling the near-merger two-body dynamics, developing innovative inference techniques targeting highly eccentric binaries, or probing the nature of black hole event horizons.
Experience in General Relativity, Bayesian Inference and Gravitational-wave Physics would be ideal, but motivated students from any physics or astrophysics background are welcome to apply.
The selected students will be part of the large Astrophysics and Space Research (ASR) group located at the heart of the beautiful campus of the University of Birmingham, providing them with a friendly, exciting and diverse research environment. The group has world-leading expertise in gravitational wave physics and astrophysics, with contributions ranging from state-of-the-art data analysis and modelling methodologies to core instrumentation, with a strong involvement in all major collaborations in the gravitational-waves field (LIGO, LISA, IPTA). Beyond gravitational waves, additional expertise of ASR members include theoretical and observational extragalactic astrophysics. For a full list of group members, please see: https://www.sr.bham.ac.uk/whoswho.php. The successful candidates will join a supportive and friendly cohort of 18 PhD students, regularly organising a range of social events throughout the program, with access to a wide selection of University facilities.
We welcome applications from all qualified applicants, and particularly encourage applications from traditionally under-represented groups in physics and astronomy. The School of Physics and Astronomy is an Institute of Physics Juno Champion since 2014 and holder of the Athena SWAN Silver Award.
Application guidelines can be found in the link attached. The application deadline is the 19th of January 2025.
Please bring the announcement to the attention of interested candidates and feel free to contact [g.carulloATbham.ac.uk] for any inquiries.

3.1. New COST Action on Relativistic Quantum Information
------------------------------------------------------------
Announcement on Hyperspace@GU:
https://hyperspace.uni-frankfurt.de/2024/10/21/new-cost-action-on-relativis…
Additional Information: https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA23115/
We are excited to announce the launch of the COST Action on Relativistic Quantum Information (RQI) that will last until September 2028. The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) is an EU-funded program that assists the formation of interdisciplinary research networks in Europe and beyond.
The RQI Action seeks to understand the relationship between Quantum Information Science (QIS) and the other major paradigm of modern physics, namely, the theory of relativity. Its aim is twofold. On one hand, it will apply quantum information concepts to major problems of relativistic physics, as they appear in diverse research fields. On the other, it aims to incorporate the fundamental principles of relativistic theories into the foundations of QIS, in order to create novel opportunities for both fundamental physics and technology.
RQI will create a strong network that will bring together researchers from different disciplines, including quantum information science and technology, high-energy physics, quantum foundations, quantum gravity, mathematical physics, quantum optics, and space science. For further information, visit the COST webpage of the Action, where you may also apply for participation in the Actions' activities.

3.2. Minkowski Institute - Call for Participation
------------------------------------------------------------
Announcement on Hyperspace@GU:
https://hyperspace.uni-frankfurt.de/2024/10/23/minkowski-institute-call-for…
Additional Information: https://minkowskiinstitute.com/spacetime.html
Minkowski Institute invites colleagues, working in areas related to the foundations and nature of spacetime, to participate in a meeting, which will address and deal with a disturbingly unprecedented (on two counts) situation in fundamental physics:
1. It appears that the reality of spacetime is an experimental fact (as Minkowski de facto demonstrated), i.e., it appears experimentally confirmed that the concept of spacetime represents a real four-dimensional world with time as the fourth dimension. What makes this experimental support for the reality of spacetime unprecedented is that the experiments, which confirmed the kinematic relativistic effects, would be impossible if the world were not four-dimensional. To understand why this is so, it is sufficient only to see in Minkowski's paper "Space and Time" that length contraction is impossible in a three-dimensional world.
2. What also constitutes an unprecedented situation in fundamental physics is that, so far, most physicists have not addressed even Minkowski's own arguments for the reality of spacetime; they simply ignored them arguing (at best) that the concept of spacetime is "just a description" and that "the question of the reality of spacetime belongs to philosophy"?! (both "justifications" for ignoring the question of the reality of spacetime are incorrect).
However, as we all (in theory) know, physics, particularly fundamental physics, does not work in that way (by avoiding fundamental issues) and cannot advance by ignoring arguments, especially given that those arguments are firmly based on the experimental evidence to such an extent that experiments would be impossible if those arguments were wrong.
Addressing Minkowski's arguments for the reality of spacetime is of crucial importance for physicists because the physics of a three-dimensional world is fundamentally different from the physics of a four-dimensional world:
1. In a three-dimensional world physics deals with motions and interactions of three-dimensional particles / bodies.
2. In a four-dimensional world physics deals with interrelations between worldlines (or worldtubes in the case of extended bodies), as Minkowski explained, and "static" deformations of curved (non-geodesic) worldtubes because there is no dynamics in spacetime; it is incorrect even to say that a particle follows a timelike geodesic worldline because in spacetime the particle itself is a timelike geodesic worldline.
The proposed meeting can become one of the biennial Minkowski meetings on the foundations of spacetime physics (https://www.minkowskiinstitute.com/meetings/) organized by Minkowski Institute. We are willing to co-organize such a meeting with other institutions.
