Contact: chris.stevens[AT]canterbury.ac.nz The Gravity and Cosmology Resesarch Group at the University of Canterbury has a three year PhD position available to work on the project "Shedding new light on fundamental physics through the scattering of gravitational waves". It is funded by a Marsden grant administered by the Royal Society Te Aparangi (RSNZ) with PI Chris Stevens (University of Canterbury, NZ) and AI Prof. Joerg Frauendiener (University of Otago, NZ). The project will work toward the fully non-linear, global scattering problem for gravitational waves in asymptotically flat space-times, an open problem in the field. Building upon work of the PI and AI over the last eight or so years, the project has a solid foundation. The already-developed numerical implementation will be built upon to attack the specific problem of gravitational wave scattering. You will need to have a MSc. in general relativity or related fields, preferably with experience in programming languages such as Python or C/C++. Prior knowledge of the conformal field equations would be an advantage. In memoriam of Janos Kannar ------------------------------------------------------------ Announcement on Hyperspace@GU: https://hyperspace.uni-frankfurt.de/2024/01/26/in-memoriam-of-janos-kannar/ Additional Information: Janos Kannar died on January 13, 2024, in the 56th year of his life. He is survived by his mother, his wife and his daughters Eszter and Katalin. Janos completed his doctoral studies at the Theoretical Department of RMKI and received his Ph.D. in 1995 with his thesis "Investigations of Spacetime Singularities in General Relativity and Einstein-Cartan Theory". He then completed his postdoctoral training in the relativity group at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Munich and as a postdoctoral fellow in the mathematical relativity research group at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Potsdam. Janos is best known for determining, in collaboration with Helmut Friedrich, the behavior of various fields characterizing Bondi systems in the region of spacetime where null infinity touches spacelike infinity. They related these fields, in particular the Newmann-Penrose constants, to the behavior of the initial data near spacelike infinity. After returning to Hungary, Janos became a Senior Research Fellow at the Theoretical Department of RMKI, where his research continued to be related to important problems in mathematical relativity, such as singularity theorems or the Cauchy problem. During the last two decades, Janos's talents have left traces in the development of new technologies of international companies such as Nokia, SAP and GE. His outstanding skills were matched by a modest, always helpful, but incredibly focused character. Helmut Friedrich and Istvan Racz ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 3.5. Living Reviews in Relativity: "Testing theories of gravity with planetary ephemerides" ------------------------------------------------------------ Announcement on Hyperspace@GU: https://hyperspace.uni-frankfurt.de/2024/01/30/living-reviews-in-relativity-... Additional Information: https://link.springer.com/journal/41114 The open-access journal Living Reviews in Relativity has published a new review article on 29 January 2024: Agnes Fienga, Olivier Minazzoli. Testing theories of gravity with planetary ephemerides. Living Rev Relativ 27, 1 (2024) https://doi.org/10.1007/s41114-023-00047-0 Abstract: We describe here how planetary ephemerides are built in the framework of General Relativity and how they can be used to test alternative theories. We focus on the definition of the reference frame (space and time) in which the planetary ephemeris is described, the equations of motion that govern the orbits of solar system bodies and electromagnetic waves. After a review on the existing planetary and lunar ephemerides, we summarize the results obtained considering full modifications of the ephemeris framework with direct comparisons with the observations of planetary systems, with a specific attention for the PPN formalism. We then discuss other formalisms such as Einstein-dilaton theories, the massless graviton and MOND. The paper finally concludes on some comments and recommendations regarding misinterpreted measurements of the advance of perihelia. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
